Christian Mack: Writer, Stylist, Admirer

Good day reader! You are either here because you’re viewing my assignment for Digital Nonfiction Storytelling or you’ve been exploring my website. Either way, I’m happy you have found this page. My name is Christian Mack, a journalism student at Suffolk University. But before explaining more about school, let’s rewind and I’ll explain why I chose to go to school in Boston. I am from Nantucket Island, off the coast of Cape Cod. Contrary to popular opinion, living there is not a wealthy, year round vacation. Yes, the summers are picturesque and the opportunity to make money in the service industry is fantastic, however the winters turn the island into a grey doldrum of determined local work ethic; quite the stark turnaround. Growing up there, I filled my time outside of school creating art, running cross country and swimming for the swim team, and browsing fashion shows from my laptop. The latter is what really motivated me in my search for schools when senior year rolled around, friends used to always say that they knew Vogue Runway would be open if they peeked over my shoulder in class. Writing my college essay about combining psychology and journalism, in a way that combined fashion, has always been of utmost interest to me. Although growing up on the island was slow, this fueled my passion to blast into the world and make a name for myself. I am set to complete a journalism major with a print/web concentration and a women’s and gender studies minor. My passion lies with fashion as I’ve mentioned, however as I’ve gone through school and been exposed to more culture in the city, I’ve found that my love for fashion falls under a broader umbrella for art and entertainment, especially through the queer lens. Seeing why and how designers go about contributing their perspective to the world is the driving force behind why I want to write.
